Stromanthe, all in colour
Stromanthe is a member of the Marantaceae from tropical America, a cousin of Calathea and Maranta. The most widely grown, Stromanthe thalia (often sold under its former name, Stromanthe sanguinea), is famous for its ‘Triostar’ selection: each leaf mixes green, cream and pink, with a bright pink underside. Like its cousins, it raises its leaves in the evening. It needs humidity and filtered light, and it's safe for pets.
Growing passport
Species and varieties
| Species or variety | What sets it apart |
|---|---|
| Stromanthe thalia ‘Triostar’ | Leaves variegated green, cream and pink, bright pink underneath. |
| Stromanthe thalia ‘Magic Star’ | Whiter, less pink variegation. |
| Ctenanthe | A neighbouring genus, often confused with it, with silver-striped leaves. |
Caring for them in Morocco
- Light: filtered and bright enough to keep the pink, never direct sun.
- Watering: soil always slightly moist. Water with water left to stand overnight: the hard water in our cities browns the tips of delicate leaves.
- Humidity: high: mist around it with a fine mist sprayer, ideally in a bright bathroom.
- Potting mix: moist and airy: our Signature Potting Mix.
Reading the symptoms
- Brown edges, curled leaves: dry air: enemy number one.
- The pink fades: lack of light.
- Scorch marks: direct sun.
