We wanted a potting mix that feeds the plant instead of just filling the pot.
What it is
Signature Potting Mix is the house repotting mix. We replaced the peat with compost, and add biochar for structure and water retention.
A good potting mix must hold enough water for the roots to drink, and leave enough air for them to breathe. That's the balance we aim for.

Why instead of peat
Peat forms in peat bogs, which cover about 3% of the land but store more carbon than all the world's forests combined, according to the IUCN. Extracting it releases that carbon. Compost is an alternative that feeds the potting mix instead of just filling it.
When to use it
- When repotting, ideally in spring or early summer.
- For a newly bought plant in a pot that's too small.
- When the potting mix is compacted, hard or exhausted.
Recommended period
Full Gentle · Dark: the step in full season. Light: the same step, gently.
Repotting: in spring and early summer; in autumn too, when roots are spilling out of the pot.
How to use it
- Choose a pot with drainage holes, 2 to 4 cm wider than the old one.
- Ease the plant out and check the roots: cut off any that are brown and soft.
- Put a little potting mix in the bottom, centre the plant and fill in, tapping lightly, without pressing down.
- Water once, thoroughly, then empty the saucer.
- Wait a few weeks before adding fertiliser: the potting mix already contains nutrients.

Frequently asked questions
What about peat?
We replaced the peat in our formula with compost.
Should I add fertiliser after repotting?
Not straight away. A fresh potting mix already contains nutrients. Wait a few weeks, then feed during the growing season.
Can it be used for cacti and succulents?
These plants want a very free-draining mix. Blend it with pozzolana and perlite, or choose our cactus and succulent mix.
Which size should I choose?
The 2-litre bag for one or two medium plants, the 5-litre bag for several plants or a large pot. Allow about half the volume of the new pot.
