Expanded clay pebbles are small balls of clay fired at very high temperature: they swell and become light, porous and strong. They don't break down and, once rinsed, can move from one pot to the next.
What they do
- Simple drainage: a layer at the bottom of the pot keeps roots away from excess water.
- A clean mulch that keeps the potting soil cool and dresses the pot.
- Hydroculture: they replace potting soil for plants grown in water.
How to use them
- At the bottom of the pot: a 2 to 3 cm layer under the potting soil.
- As a mulch: a 1 to 2 cm layer on the surface.
- Mixed into indoor potting soil, they aerate it (about 15% of the mix).
- For hydroculture: rinse them, then fill the pot around the washed roots.
Which size should I choose?
The 1 L bag covers the bottom of two or three medium pots. For hydroculture or a large planter, take the 5 L bag, which is cheaper per litre.
Frequently asked questions
Clay pebbles or pozzolana?
Pebbles, round and light, are used at the bottom of the pot, on the surface and for hydroculture.
Pozzolana, denser, blends better with potting soil and steadies large pots.
Are they reusable?
Yes: rinse them in clean water and let them dry.
