Peperomia, small, tough and safe

With more than a thousand species, the genus Peperomia, in the pepper family (Piperaceae), is one of the largest in the plant world. Most come from tropical America, where they often grow on tree trunks and rocks. Their thick leaves store water, which makes them very tolerant of forgotten waterings. They stay small, grow slowly and are safe for cats and dogs: perfect plants for an office, a shelf or a kitchen.

Peperomia argyreiaThe ‘watermelon’: round leaves striped with silver.

Caring for them in Morocco

  • Light: preferably bright and indirect; tolerates medium light.
  • Watering: let the soil dry out almost completely between waterings: it's nearly a succulent.
  • Potting mix: very free-draining: a potting mix lightened with perlite, or blended with a little cactus mix.
  • Pot: small: it likes being snug, repot only every two to three years.

Reading the symptoms

  • Soft stems, leaves blackening at the base: overwatering, the number one cause.
  • Leaves dropping: cold or overwatering.
  • Wrinkled leaves: thirst: water and they'll plump up again.

Frequently asked questions

Is Pilea a Peperomia?

No. Pilea peperomioides, the Chinese money plant, belongs to the nettle family; it owes its name to its resemblance to some Peperomias.

How do I propagate a Peperomia?

A leaf with its stalk, planted in a light mix and kept just moist, roots within a few weeks.
