Syngonium, the plant that changes shape

Syngonium is an aroid from tropical America with around thirty species. When young, it forms a compact clump of arrow-shaped leaves; as it ages, it becomes a vine and its leaves divide into three, five or seven lobes. That's why it's pruned regularly: to keep those pretty young leaves. Horticultural selection has multiplied the colours, from green to pale pink.

Caring for them in Morocco

  • Light: soft to medium, without direct sun; a little more to keep the pink.
  • Watering: when the soil starts to dry; it likes slightly moist soil.
  • Pruning: pinch out stems that get long to keep a compact clump of arrow-shaped leaves.
  • Humidity: medium to high: mist now and then with a fine mist sprayer.

Reading the symptoms

  • Leaves turning green: lack of light or an ageing plant: prune it and move it closer.
  • Long stems and lobed leaves: it's becoming a vine: prune it, or give it a moss pole.
  • Brown tips: dry air.

Frequently asked questions

Why are my Syngonium's leaves changing?

It's in its nature: as it grows, it moves from arrow-shaped to lobed leaves. Regular pruning keeps the juvenile form.
