Description

Calathea lancifolia owes its Rattlesnake nickname to its long, wavy leaves marked with dark green spots. Their purple undersides show as soon as they rise in the evening. It's one of the easiest calatheas: it copes with indoor air better than its cousins.

Where to place it

In a bright living room or bathroom, without direct sun. Its upright habit suits a low piece of furniture or the floor, near other plants that keep the air humid.

Caring for your Calathea lancifolia

  • Water as soon as the surface of the soil dries, using low-lime water.
  • Mist the foliage with a fine-mist spray bottle when the air is dry.
  • Cut damaged leaves off at the base to make room for new ones.
  • Feed it lightly every three weeks in spring and summer.

The right potting mix

A moist, airy mix: our Alocasia and tropical plant mix.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Letting the soil dry out completely between waterings.
  • Direct sun, which fades the patterns.
  • Radiators and air conditioning.
