Description
Spathiphyllum, also called the peace lily, is one of the few plants that flower in soft light. Its white flowers — a large bract around a cream spike — rise above glossy green foliage. This small 8 cm pot is perfect for a desk, a bedside table or a first gift.

Where to place it
In a bedroom, office, bathroom or entrance. It grows in soft light but flowers more in a bright room.
Caring for your Spathiphyllum
- Keep the soil moist. If its leaves suddenly droop, it's thirsty: water it and it will perk up within a few hours.
- Cut faded flowers off at the base of their stem.
- Repot it in spring into a 12 cm pot: such a small pot dries out quickly.
- To make it flower again, feed it every two to three weeks in spring and summer with root feed for foliage plants.

Mistakes to avoid
- Letting it wilt often: it recovers, but the leaf edges turn brown.
- Direct sun, which burns the leaves.
- Keeping it for years in its small 8 cm pot.

Why has it stopped flowering?
Usually it's short of light or food. Move it closer to a window and add fertiliser in spring.
Does Spathiphyllum purify the air?
It's often listed among air-purifying plants. In a home, the effect is modest: choose it mainly for its flowers and how easy it is.
