Aglaonema, the champion of dark corners
Aglaonema is an aroid native to the forest understorey of Southeast Asia, where it grows in the shade of tall trees. Hence its great quality: it copes with low light better than almost any other houseplant. Horticultural selection has multiplied the colours, from silver to bright pink. It grows slowly, stays compact and forgives forgotten waterings: an excellent plant for an entrance, a corridor or an office far from the window.
Growing passport
Species and varieties
| Species or variety | What sets it apart |
|---|---|
| Aglaonema ‘Silver Queen’ | Leaves almost entirely silver. The most shade-tolerant. |
| Aglaonema ‘Golden Madonna’ | Green and cream variegated foliage, in a dense clump. |
| Aglaonema ‘Maria’ | Dark green marbled with silver, very hardy. |
| Red Aglaonema (‘Siam Aurora’, ‘Red Valentine’) | Leaves edged or splashed with pink and red. A little more light to keep the colours. |
Caring for them in Morocco
- Light: low to medium, no direct sun. Pink or red varieties want a little more.
- Watering: when the soil is dry a few centimetres down; it prefers too little to too much.
- Warmth: it dislikes cold: never below 15 °C, away from draughts and direct air conditioning.
- Potting mix and food: our Signature Potting Mix, and a little compost tea root feed once a month in spring and summer.
Reading the symptoms
- Yellow leaves: overwatering, especially in a dark corner where the soil dries slowly.
- Dark, soft spots: a cold snap or a draught.
- Fading colours: too little light for a red or pink variety.

Frequently asked questions
Can an Aglaonema live without a window?
It tolerates low light, but not total darkness. A room with a little natural light, even far from the window, is enough.
Is Aglaonema toxic?
Yes, if chewed, like all aroids. Keep out of reach of pets and children.
