Where to place it
In a bright, rather cool spot: an entrance, an office, a living room that isn't overheated. It loves bright corners without direct sun and copes with a shaded terrace.
Caring for your Fatsia japonica
- Water when the top of the soil is dry; water less in winter.
- It prefers coolness to dry heat: keep it away from radiators.
- Wipe its large leaves to keep them glossy.
- Feed it every three weeks in spring and summer with root feed for foliage plants.
The right potting mix
A rich, free-draining potting soil. Our Alocasia and tropical plant mix suits it; add a little perlite for a terracotta pot.
Mistakes to avoid
- Dry heat: limp leaves and dry edges.
- Direct sun: the cream areas scorch.
- A pot that's too small for its large leaves.
Frequently asked questions
Can it live outdoors?
Yes, in shade or partial shade, in a frost-free area. The variegated form is more sensitive to sun than the green Fatsia.
