Description
The Anthurium is the longest-lasting flowering plant: each flower — in fact a waxy bract around a spike — lasts several weeks. This Anthurium andreanum variety stands out for flowers of such a deep red they look almost chocolate, glossy as lacquer, set against dark green heart-shaped foliage.
At a glance
| Botanical name | Anthurium andreanum |
|---|---|
| Colour | very dark red, almost chocolate |
| Light | bright and indirect |
| Watering | about once a week |
| Care | moderate |
| Pets | Toxic if chewed: keep out of reach of cats, dogs and young children |
Where to place it
In a bright room without direct sun: a living room or bedroom near a window with a sheer curtain. Light is what makes an Anthurium flower again.
Caring for your Anthurium
- Water when the top of the soil is dry; it doesn't like wet feet.
- It appreciates humidity: mist around it with a fine-mist spray bottle, without wetting the flowers.
- Cut faded flowers off at the base of their stem.
- Feed it every three weeks in spring and summer for continuous flowering.
The right potting mix
Its roots love air: a very airy mix with bark chips and coco chips. Our Alocasia and tropical plant mix suits it very well.
Mistakes to avoid
- Dense, overwatered potting soil: root rot.
- A dark corner: it stops flowering.
- Direct sun on the leaves.
