Anthurium, a plant that lives in trees

With nearly a thousand species, Anthurium is the largest genus in the aroid family. It comes from the tropical forests of the Americas, where many species grow clinging to trees: their roots need air as much as water. Two main groups are grown: flowering Anthuriums, whose “flower” is a waxy bract that lasts several weeks, and collectors' Anthuriums, prized for their velvety foliage with silver veins.

Species and varieties

Species or varietyWhat sets it apart
Anthurium andreanumThe classic flowering Anthurium: red, pink, white or almost black spathe. Flowers almost all year round.
Anthurium scherzerianumSmaller, with a spike curled like a corkscrew. Copes a little better with dry air.
Anthurium crystallinumLarge, velvety heart-shaped leaves with silver veins. A foliage plant.
Anthurium clarinerviumThick heart-shaped leaves, strongly marked white veins. Compact and graphic.
Anthurium warocqueanum and veitchiiThe ‘Queen’ and the ‘King’: huge, hanging leaves. For collectors, with plenty of humidity.

Caring for it in Morocco

  • Light: bright and indirect. Light is what makes an Anthurium flower again; direct sun burns the leaves.
  • Watering: when the top of the soil is dry, never leaving water in the saucer. Roots sitting in water rot quickly.
  • Potting mix: very airy, with bark and coco chips. Our Signature Potting Mix suits it; for collectors' species, add bark.
  • Humidity: high for foliage species. In summer and under air conditioning, mist around it with a fine mist sprayer or group it with other plants.
  • Aerial roots: normal. Don't cut them; guide them towards the potting mix.

Reading the symptoms

  • No new flowers: too little light, or a plant short of food in spring and summer.
  • Yellow leaves: overwatering or a mix that's too compact: let it dry, then repot in an airier mix.
  • Brown, dry edges: air too dry or direct sun.
  • Flower turning green or brown: it has had its time: cut its stem at the base.

Frequently asked questions

How long does an Anthurium flower last?

Often more than a month. A well-placed plant produces new ones throughout the year.

How do I get an Anthurium to flower again?

Give it more light, still without direct sun, and a light feed in spring and summer. A slightly cooler winter, around 16 to 18 °C, also helps restart flowering.

Is Anthurium toxic?

Yes, if chewed: like all aroids, it contains calcium oxalate crystals. Keep out of reach of pets and young children.
