Description

Philodendron Imperial Red has the same compact silhouette as the Imperial Green, but with far more intense colours. Its new leaves emerge bright red, then turn burgundy and dark green with red glints as they mature. The result is a warm, graphic plant that's easy to live with.

Where to place it

In a bright room: light is what keeps its red glints intense. Avoid direct sun, which dulls and scorches the foliage.

Caring for your Philodendron Imperial Red

  • Water when the top of the soil is dry; don't let water sit in the heart of the plant.
  • Wipe the leaves to keep them glossy.
  • Remove old lower leaves as they yellow.
  • A feed of root feed for foliage plants once a month in spring and summer.

The right potting mix

A rich, airy mix, such as our Alocasia and tropical plant mix.

Mistakes to avoid

  • A corner that's too dark: the red glints fade.
  • Too much water in winter.
  • Cold draughts near a door or air conditioner.

Frequently asked questions

Why are the new leaves redder?
That's its signature: young leaves emerge bright red and darken over time. The plant always shows several shades.
