Philodendron, the most accommodating of tropicals

Philodendron is one of the largest genera in the aroid family, with nearly 500 species native to tropical America. Two main types are grown: climbers, which cling to a moss pole with their aerial roots, and self-heading types, which form a rosette or a short trunk, like the Imperials. The former Philodendron selloum and xanadu are now placed in a neighbouring genus, Thaumatophyllum, but everyone still calls them Philodendron. Their great quality: they forgive medium light and forgotten waterings.

Species and varieties

Species or varietyWhat sets it apart
Philodendron ‘Birkin’Dark green leaves striped with creamy white. Compact, slow-growing.
Philodendron ‘Imperial Green’A rosette of large glossy green leaves. Very easy, ideal for beginners.
Philodendron ‘Imperial Red’Same habit, with red young leaves that darken to burgundy.
Thaumatophyllum xanaduLobed foliage in a compact clump, for small spaces.
Thaumatophyllum bipinnatifidum (selloum)Large, deeply lobed leaves, a short trunk with age. Up to 2 m.
Philodendron hederaceum (scandens)The climber with small heart-shaped leaves, often mistaken for pothos. ‘Brasil’ and ‘Micans’ varieties have velvety foliage.

Caring for them in Morocco

  • Light: bright without direct sun. They tolerate medium light; variegated or red varieties need more brightness to keep their colours.
  • Watering: when the top few centimetres of soil are dry; much less in winter.
  • Support: for climbers, a moss or coir pole gives larger leaves. Self-heading types don't need one.
  • Potting mix and food: our Signature Potting Mix, and compost tea root feed every two to three weeks in spring and summer.

Reading the symptoms

  • Lower leaves yellowing: often overwatering; a single old leaf going on its own is normal.
  • Variegation fading (Birkin): lack of light: move it closer to the window.
  • Long stems with widely spaced leaves: lack of light, for climbers.
  • Brown tips: dry air or hard water.

Frequently asked questions

Which Philodendron for a beginner?

Imperial Green and Xanadu: tough and compact, they tolerate medium light and a few forgotten waterings.

Philodendron or pothos?

The heart-leaved climbing Philodendron and pothos look alike. New Philodendron leaves emerge from a sheath (cataphyll) that then dries out; pothos leaves unfurl from the previous leaf.

Is Philodendron toxic?

Yes, if chewed: keep out of reach of cats, dogs and young children.
