Description
Philodendron selloum, now classified as Thaumatophyllum bipinnatifidum, unfurls large, textured leaves cut into deep lobes. With age, its stem becomes a real little trunk and the plant takes on the look of a tree. Indoors, given space, it can reach 1.5 to 2 m.

Where to place it
In a spacious living room or a bright entrance, where its leaves can spread out. A large picture window with a sheer curtain is ideal. It copes with a covered, sheltered terrace in summer.
Caring for your Philodendron selloum
- Water when the top few centimetres of soil are dry; cut back considerably in winter.
- Give the pot a quarter turn every month for a balanced silhouette.
- Cut old yellowing leaves off at the base: that's normal — the plant renews itself from the top.
- Feed it every two to three weeks in spring and summer with root feed for foliage plants.
The right potting mix
A rich, free-draining mix. Our Alocasia and tropical plant mix suits it; for a very large pot, add bark chips to keep the soil airy.
Mistakes to avoid
- A pot that's too small: the plant tires quickly and becomes unstable.
- Heavy watering in winter in a cool room.
- Direct afternoon sun on the leaves.
Frequently asked questions
How much space should I allow?
Allow at least 1.2 m across once mature: its leaves spread as wide as they grow tall.
