Pozzolana

Pozzolana is a light red volcanic rock full of tiny cavities. Mixed into potting soil, it opens up channels for water and air. It is entirely mineral: it neither breaks down nor compacts, even after years.

What it does

• Lasting drainage that protects roots from standing water.
• Weight: it steadies large pots and tall plants.
• A mineral mulch that reduces evaporation and keeps the base of the plant clean.

How to use it

• Cacti and succulents: about 40% of the mix, with a light potting soil. Or choose our ready-to-use cactus and succulent mix.
• Foliage plants: about 15% of the mix, for a free-draining potting soil.
• As a mulch: a 1 to 2 cm layer on the surface of the pot.

If the granules are dusty, rinse them before use.

Which size should I choose?

The 1 L bag is enough to mulch a few pots or improve a small repotting. For a large pot or a cactus collection, the 5 L bag works out cheaper per litre.

Frequently asked questions

Pozzolana or clay pebbles? Both drain. Pozzolana, denser and more angular, blends better with potting soil and steadies the pot; clay pebbles, round and light, are mostly used at the bottom of the pot, as a mulch or for hydroculture. At the bottom of the pot or in the mix? Both work. Mixed into the potting soil through the whole pot, it drains better than as a simple layer at the bottom. Packed at our Rabat studio.
