Description
Calathea orbifolia is arguably the most beautiful calathea: very large, almost round leaves in soft green, striped with broad silver bands. It brings softness and elegance to a softly lit corner. It is a demanding plant that needs humidity and good-quality water, but it amply rewards the attention you give it.

Where to place it
In a bright room out of the sun: a bedroom, a bright bathroom or a living room with sheer curtains. Away from radiators, air conditioning and draughts.
Caring for your Calathea orbifolia
- Keep the soil moist — never soggy, never dry: water as soon as the surface dries.
- Use low-lime water, left to stand overnight or filtered: lime browns the leaf edges.
- Mist around the plant with a fine-mist spray bottle, or stand the pot on a tray of damp pebbles.
- Feed it lightly every three weeks in spring and summer.
The right potting mix
A moist, airy mix that holds water without getting waterlogged: our Alocasia and tropical plant mix suits it very well.
Mistakes to avoid
- Dry air: brown leaf edges and curled leaves.
- Letting the soil dry out completely.
- Very hard tap water used straight from the tap.
Frequently asked questions
Its leaves close up in the evening — is that normal?
Yes. Like all members of the prayer-plant family, it moves its leaves with the light: it raises them in the evening and lowers them in the morning.
Every plant is chosen and checked at the studio before it leaves. Delivery anywhere in Morocco, or collection from our studio in Rabat. A plant that arrives damaged will be exchanged: let us know within 48 hours with a photo.
To welcome it properly
