Description
Ficus elastica, the rubber plant, is a safe bet for any home. The Abidjan variety has the darkest leaves: a deep green with purple glints, thick and glossy like leather. Young leaves emerge from a red sheath. This large plant already has real presence and grows without asking for much.

Where to place it
In a bright living room or office. It copes with medium light better than the fiddle-leaf fig, but grows faster and straighter near a window.
Caring for your Ficus elastica
- Water when the soil is dry a few centimetres down; it prefers going a little short to drinking too much.
- Wipe its large leaves: they shine and breathe better.
- To make it branch, cut off the top in spring; protect your hands, as the sap runs.
- Feed it every three weeks in spring and summer with root feed for foliage plants.
The right potting mix
A free-draining potting soil lightened with perlite. Our Alocasia and tropical plant mix also suits it.
Mistakes to avoid
- Overwatering: lower leaves yellow and drop.
- Cold and draughts.
- A corner that's too dark: a long stem with widely spaced leaves.
Frequently asked questions
Can I prune it?
Yes, in spring. It regrows two or three branches below the cut. The white sap is irritating: wear gloves.
