Description

Dracaena marginata, known as the Madagascar dragon tree, forms tufts of fine, pointed green leaves edged with red at the top of slender stems. It is very undemanding and grows slowly. Ours is grown by partner nurseries, then repotted at our studio in a 13 cm handmade pot whose saucer lets you water from below.

Where to place it

On a desk, shelf or coffee table, in a bright room. It tolerates medium light but keeps brighter colours near a window.

Caring for your Dracaena marginata

  • Pour water into the saucer: the soil draws it up by capillary action. Wait until the surface is dry before watering again.
  • It isn't fussy about humidity but appreciates air that isn't too dry.
  • Remove the old lower leaves as they dry: that's how it forms its trunk.
  • Feed it once a month in spring and summer with root feed for foliage plants.

The right potting mix

A light, free-draining mix. When repotting, potting soil lightened with perlite suits it.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Leaving water in the saucer all the time.
  • Very hard water: brown leaf tips.
  • Scorching afternoon sun.

Frequently asked questions

How does watering through the saucer work?
