Description
Ficus elastica Belize is a variegated rubber plant. Its thick leaves blend green, cream and pink, with a bright pink midrib; the young leaves are the most colourful. It keeps the sturdiness of Ficus elastica, with much brighter foliage.
At a glance
| Botanical name | Ficus elastica 'Belize' |
|---|---|
| Light | bright and indirect |
| Watering | about once a week |
| Growth | moderate |
| Care | easy |
| Pets | Its white sap irritates the skin and is toxic to pets: keep out of reach of cats and dogs |
Where to place it
Near a bright window, without scorching sun. The more light it gets, the more intense its pinks; in a dark corner it turns greener.
Caring for your Ficus elastica Belize
- Water when the soil is dry a few centimetres down, then empty the saucer.
- Dust the leaves with cleaning gloves or a damp cloth.
- Turn the pot from time to time for even growth.
- Feed it every three weeks in spring and summer with root feed for foliage plants.
The right potting mix
A free-draining potting soil lightened with perlite, or our Alocasia and tropical plant mix.
Mistakes to avoid
- Lack of light: it loses its colour.
- Direct afternoon sun: the cream areas scorch.
- Too much water in winter.
Frequently asked questions
The older leaves are less pink — is that normal?
Yes. The pink is brightest on young leaves and softens over time.
