Description
Pilea peperomioides is called the Chinese money plant, or pancake plant, for its perfectly round, coin-like leaves carried on slender stems. It's also known as the friendship plant: it produces small offsets at its base that you can separate and give away. Very easy, it grows fast in good light.

Where to place it
Near a bright window: an office, kitchen or living room. Direct sun marks its leaves; a sheer curtain is enough to protect it.
Caring for your Pilea peperomioides
- Water when the top two centimetres of soil are dry.
- Give the pot a quarter turn every week: it leans towards the light.
- Separate the offsets once they have a few leaves and pot them up: gifts in the making.
- Feed it once a month in spring and summer with root feed for foliage plants.
The right potting mix
A light, free-draining potting soil lightened with perlite.
Mistakes to avoid
- Too much water: falling leaves and a soft stem.
- Never turning the pot: the plant leans to one side.
- Direct sun through a window.
Frequently asked questions
Is it a Peperomia?
No: despite its Latin name, Pilea peperomioides belongs to another family, the nettles. It's often confused with Peperomias because of its round leaves.
